Directing Models

Have you ever had a model step up in front of your lens, assume some standard pose and (much worse) put on that modelling face? No matter what you do now, she’s gonna stick to that pose and that I-am-sexy-and-wild-yet-arrogant-and-completely-bland-expression. Perhaps you manage to break the habit for a click or two, but as soon as you adjust your aperture for half a stop and look back at her (or him!!!) things have magically snapped back…

First of all: This is NOT the models fault, it is entirely the photographers fault! Being a photographer is not all about fiddling with your gear, it is to a large extent about working with people, with talent, with crew and getting the best out of them. So you have to be able to tell your model the right things, enabling him/her to perform up to spec.

It has been my experience that many models, when they started out had the bad luck of having to work with some hack photographers. The sort of shooter which got into the game because they thought they’d meet more pretty girls that way and think that the bathing suit calendar at the mechanics shop represents the aesthetic summit of contemporary photography… you get the idea. So they try to get just that out of the newcomer models, who in turn are really just hoping to build their book. After a while, always being asked to look and pose that very same way, things start to stick.

There are a few simple techniques, which actually come out of film directing and will work like a charm on almost anybody. Let’s have a look at the following shot:

There’s life behind Tatjana’s eyes and contact with the viewer in this one. You can tell that something is moving her. Try to figure out what I might have told her to get the performance and then hit the jump to read what the secret is…

canon profashional photo awards 2008

I am very happy to announce that I have been voted among the finalists of the 2008 Canon ProFashional Photo Awards! The jury selected 30 images out of 4′000 to be exhibited at the Igedo Fashion Fair in Düsseldorf last weekend. I am expecially happy that not just one, but two of them were mine. They are featured in this year’s CPPA Exhibition Catalogue (see images below) and may also be viewed on the CPPA webiste among the other finalists.

I give my thanx to the jury, Canon and all the people who helped in the creation of these images!

Behind the scenes: Tatjana meets Nicolas Henri

Recently I had the fortune to shoot some material with Tatjana Gellert.
We only had a few hours before she had to head out and catch her train to Germany. I picked the harbour area in Basel as an industrial background for the shoot. (I actually work there often as there are so many corners, cool grafitti walls, train tracks, etc. - you find something new every time…)

While our make up artist Rachel was working on Tatjana, we had a friendly encounter with a local dock worker. He informed us that he could tell we were going to take pictures around there and that he had done so aswell with his girlfriend recently. Appearently he got a $400 fine when the police were walking by, because he and his GF weren’t wearing bright orange vests so that they could be spottet from the moon, or at least by the crane operators near by.  (more after the jump…)

Empty Spaces

As most of you will know I take pictures of people. Humans. Sometimes Super Humans. As long as there’s a person in an image you got me hooked. Much less so with pictures, without humans. It will take a lot for me to get excited about images without a person in it. To me they are empty. A room or a space is empty with the absence of a human being. Does that mean it’s also boring? Maybe… maybe not.

Don’t get me wrong, I hold great respect for folks who can spend hours taking a picture of say a building. And I can get excited, when photographers achieve expression and meaning in the absence of a face or a human figure. It must be the hardest thing to do.

Perhaps out of this appreciation for the select few who “can” do it, I recently became aware of a few “empty spaces” around me. I pass by them regularly and have been for years. And suddenly they grabbed me, spoke to me even. Is it the absence of person, the absence of what interests me, that these places suddenly start to captivate me?

Here are two attempts:

Recreational Area…

Basketball Court…

(I have to admit: I also wanted to test my new 17-40mm f/4L … )

Happy weekend to all!

heavy weight fashionistas

This just in: Art + Commerce is hosting a montage of images comparing Guy Bourdin (1928-1991), the Hitchcock (in my opinion) of fashion photography and  Maestro Steven Meisel. Watch it here!

Simple still works…

Last Saturday we went out into the sun flooded fields with Rae for some portraiture work. As usual I had my fellow Elinchrom Ranger, two strobe heads and modifiers with me…

More after the jump!

One Strobe Fashion Shoot

Just stumbled upon this little behind the scenes clip from UK fashion photographer Steve Howdle. It’s taken out of a BBC News piece and can be viewed through their player here.

From the looks of it Mr Howdle is using one single strobe mixed in with the sun. (An Elinchrom beauty dish with a FreeLite powered by a Ranger RX pack.) On the other I hand I keep hearing more and more stories of photogs renting 40+ strobes for the single purpose of impressing clients, while 80% of the gear just stands around… not even firing. Nice to see that it can work the other way around too!

I just love these things as they always hint towards the working approach of other artists. I’m hoping to post some video footage of my shoots in the near future as well… stay tuned.

Get your colors straight!

This just in: The brand new Firefox 3.0 supports ICC Profiles!

As you may or may not know, electronic images have embedded meta data (called ICC-Profiles), which are used to properly display the colors on your screen the way the photographer intendend them to be. Photoshop and other software have been utilizing this for a long time. Not so much with internet browsers, which are the platform most images are viewed by the public today.

So up until now what you saw on your screen was an approximation - at best - how an image was supposed to look. Check Rob Galbraith’s page here to find out how to use this feature!

Firefox V3.0 can be obtained here (for free)!

Go get it!

And: If you want to learn more about ICC-Profiling and color management, there’s a nice explanation about it to be found over at Pixsylated.

Propellerman: A new Star is born

I just stumbled upon this little gem: Propellerman - Superhero of female desires!

Here’s a little excerpt of his bio:

When I was a young man, I couldn’t take my life anymore, so I escaped civilisation by travelling through the Amazon rain forest in order to find my true self. After months of travelling, I met the amazing people of the Yawanawá tribe, who have never seen a person of the modern world before. The tribe took me on like I was part of the family and I lived with them for over 6 years. During this time I was introduced to the Yawanawá’s rituals and developed a great passion for their medical skills. The tribe’s shaman shared his extensive knowledge and secrets about the local botany with me and showed me how to create herbal drugs to enhance my mental and physical state. At one of the tribe’s rituals a special mixture gave me the unique ability to rotate my best piece like a propeller. I finally found my true self! Now I am PROPELLERMAN - the Superhero of female desires!

Apart from making big buck movies he also models for various internationally acclaimed photographers. Here’s a behind the scenes from a recent shoot:

Check out his Blog or Website! It’s worth it :-)

I’ll dedicate my day to try and arrange a shooting with Propellerman. Wouldn’t wanna miss him in my portfolio! Would you?

Awesome!
